USBC port not working on MacBook Pro 2017

One of the 2 USBc ports on my MacBook Pro is not working. Have tried rebooting the computer twice but it has no effect. I've also tired reseting NVRAM and SMC. Have tried two peripheral devices (a Sandisk SSD and a Thunderbolt to USBC adapter)- both work in the other port but will not function in the one causing the trouble. The only thing that works on the faulty one is charging. Any ideas as how to address this?

Can you verify MacBookPro14,1 /with no Touchbar (see >About this Mac)


Both ports on this model should have full port power both charge & data transfer.


Redefining port definition happens with each reboot—

you can try manually resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379


If no resolve Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295



Otherwise if no resolve I would suspect a hardware issue: cable /cable connection /port itself.

If only one of the two USB-C ports on the same side work, then it means that I/O Board on that side is bad and needs to be replaced. You will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider repair the laptop.


Edit: For some reason I didn't see your later post about the non-Touchbar model. This means it will require the replacement of the Logic Board which will be expensive. Make sure to have a good backup in case your laptop qualifies for the free Apple SSD Repair Program which could result in Apple erasing the SSD or even replacing the SSD.

Probably around/at least $500 US, but you will need to contact Apple or an AASP for an exact quote. Some of it depends on whether there is any accidental liquid damage (very common in my personal experience) and whether the laptop is mailed to Apple or whether the repair is performed by the local Apple tech. At least with the four port model the I/O ports are part of an inexpensive I/O Board, but unfortunately with the two port model the I/O ports are part of the Logic Board.
