Phone is turning "do not disturb" on one particular conversation by itself

You can put individual conversations on DND independently of the phone’s DND settings. From the list view in Messages swipe the entry to the left and tap on the bell icon to enable or disable DND for that specific conversation.

We understand from your post that one of your conversations keeps getting muted and you are missing notifications for it. Make sure that the conversation is not muted on any other devices that may be using your same Apple ID like an iPad, Mac, or if you share your Apple ID anyone else's iPhone. Another option is to create a new group conversation and delete the old one. This article has steps under the heading, "Delete a message or conversation", on how to delete the conversation:

Had the same issue. I deleted the message thread and also had everyone else also delete the thread. They individually texted me to confirm the thread was deleted. Then I started a new message thread and it worked!!!

Is your phone turning on Do not Disturb in Settings/Do Not Disturb, or is it setting that ONE conversation to Do not Disturb just for alerts on that ONE conversation? That is, you go to Settings/Do Not Disturb, make sure it is OFF and that Scheduled is also off, then you go to this conversation, go back to Settings/Do Not Disturb again and it is ON?

For all of the people with this issue, there is one Messages conversation that will always go to Hide Notifications, DnD, whatever the term is for that specific Message thread. You can turn it off on that Thread, but the iPhone turns it back on.

No other DnD or Hide Notifications are involved.

All other messages and notifications work without issue. It's always one particular message chain, and it happens to more than one person.

We all have the latest iOS updated, as well.

In a group message, if one person hides it I suspect that hides it for everyone in the thread. It will take some experimentation to find out, but I think that’s what’s happening. It would certainly be true if another participant in the thread shares an Apple ID with you.

I have on a conversation that hides alerts no matter what I do.

I have- checked ALL of my devices (as listed on my Apple ID - setting those to SHOW ALERTS) -- it still returns on.

I do not have any schedule or DND or clock settings that would mute or hide alerts.

This is bonkers.

I agree. Totally ridiculous... Delete a message stream I've had for 10 years with a group of friends? Have turned off do not disturb on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro and, lo and behold... back it comes. A single conversation. Bloody annoying.

No matter how many times you disable DnD, the iPhone will turn it on. You don't even have to reboot. It will turn it on.

There are no schedules, night modes or anything. This is the iPhone refusing to save the end user's directive.

I am having this same issue with a group chat I’ve had for over 6 years! It started when I turned it on “Do Not Disturb” ONCE and it kept turning back on after I would turn it off. So frustrating!!! I don’t want to leave the chat, but maybe leaving and getting re-added can fix it? Has anyone tried it?

I also have the most recent update, and everyone in my group chat has iPhones.

Never ever had a sleep schedule set up. No other messages do this. It will re-enable DnD as many times a day as I check that thread. I turn off DnD, I receive messages, and within a few minutes, it re-enables DnD. This is bonkers. And I can't delete this thread, its a very important organizational work group.

So thank you for asking this question. It just started happening to me too with only one group of 2 coworkers. It has been going on over one week now every message goes to DND. It’s super frustrating, I have tried everything and it’s not user error. I now deleted the thread afte reading some suggestions here, and hope that works!

I have this same problem. I even put ringtone emergency bypass on and that didn’t solve the issue.

Has there been any resolution for this? I have had this issue for months and cannot find a solution.
