Mac Mini M1 USB 3.1 Gen2 speeds are not 10 Gb/s as advertised

My new Mac Mini M1 cannot seem to achieve 10Gb/s speeds via USB 3.1 Gen2. I have spent 2 hours chatting with Apple to no avail. I'm running 11.2 and have tried Safe Mode.

I have a external hard drive (OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini) running two SSDs in RAID-0. This enclosure/drives are known to work.

I've tested 3 configurations:

SSD > Mini (rear TB3 port) = 5 Gb/s (~375 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)

SSD > TB3 dock using USB 3.1 Gen2 port > Mini = 5 Gb/s (~375 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)

SSD > TB3 dock using TB3 port > Mini = 10 Gb/s (~800 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)

Blackmagic Speed Test supports what Apple's System Reports show.

What can I do to get the Mini to work as advertised?

No it shouldn't be required, but the M1 Macs are a lot different. I've had to use a USB3 hub in order to use an early USB3 drive dock on my Mac for the last 6 years. If I don't, the USB port on my Mac turns off requiring a system reboot to restore. I suspect the peripheral is at fault, but at the time I didn't have any other USB3 system to test it with.

Work with OWC tech support. If there is a compatibility issue they will need to know in order to fix it themselves or so they can work with Apple to fix it.

I plan to speak with OWC again now that i've spoken to Apple. But I did spent about 4 hours on tech support with OWC between January 20-26. Their final troubleshooting suggestion was to send me a new USB-C (USB 3.1 gen2) cable for my hard drive. The cable didn't change anything.

Looking at my first post, I should add for clarity, the dock it an OWC 14 port TB3 dock.

I'm confused as to why I would I get the 10 Gb/s speed with my USB-C OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini HD enclosure going through the dock via the dock's TB3 port input and NOT simply direct through the M1 Mini itself. I'm new to TB3 so, for the time being, this workaround is ok. I don't currently have a lot of TB3 connections to make. But it shouldn't be required to use a 3rd party piece of hardware to achieve advertised Apple specs. Something is amiss.

Hard Drive:

OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini RAID enclosure containing two 1TB mercury electra 6g SSD running in RAID-0. USB 3.1 Gen2 cable.

Dock:

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock

As I mentioned previously, I've tested 3 configurations (I've added additional info for clarity)>

  1. SSD plugged into Mini via rear TB3 port using 2 different OWC-provided USB 3.1 Gen2 cables = 5 Gb/s (~375 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)
  2. SSD plugged into TB3 dock via front USB 3.1 Gen2 port using 2 different OWC-provided USB 3.1 Gen2 cables. TB3 dock plugged into Mini using OWC-provided TB3 cable = 5 Gb/s (~375 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)
  3. SSD plugged into TB3 dock via rear TB3 port using OWC-provided USB 3.1 Gen2 cables. TB3 dock plugged into Mini using OWC-provided TB3 cable = 10 Gb/s (~800 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)

I've also now tested the drive plugged directly into the Mini using a TB3 cable (instead of the OWC-provided USB 3.1 Gen2 cable). = 5 Gb/s (~375 MB/s Blackmagic Speed Test)

I am wondering whether the new Intel Thunderbolt/USB 4

controllers that are being used don't like some USB based USB-C controllers?

As of yet, I don't have any USB-C/USB 3.1 Gen 2 or better devices to check on

my M1 MacBook Air to see if that may be the case.

I think it's not the Mac who has issues, I just got my Mac M1 and I tried to connect it to my Intel NUC (8th gen) via Thunderbolt cable (network bridge) and quick network speed test shows transfer rate at about 681 MB/s with USB-C cable which I got with my LG monitor:

I am going to retest this with a proper Thunderbird3 rated cable, but this looks like something which needs to be fixed on the OWC side (firmware update if possible).
