Big Sur

Is it just me?

Relative newcomer to apple, macbook pro aquired some 5 month ago. 30 years of windows prior. Happy to explore a new OS, Catalina. Worked well, logical, add free, happy chappie! Upgraded to "Big Sur" as per the program(Supposed to be better) and the "Creeping death" kicked in? Imediate Issues with "Out of application memory? Got this with no apps open? Increase in "typo's" 50-60% (I'm not that bad), progressed to "Sticky touch pad" and complete failure of 1 key "3/£

". If I press top right corner it works sometimes, use it normally and I get nowt! Rainbow wheel of "where's my memory". Unscheduled Application shut downs? Scheduled for repair? I suspect The OS is the culprit? "Back up your files before servicing"? "Time machine" This application(Apple) cannot be opened as Apple cannot verify it's source? ERRR! Catalina please!

Hmmm. No back up plan is never advised

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test as caches get rebuilt.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

To get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

If you can not even run the Machine :

Boot into Internet Recovery (Option Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina/Big Sur) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices The best sequence is —

• Volume level

• Container level

• Parent drive

Recovery: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

If your drive repairs errors or no error try reinstalling the MacOS on top of the existing macOS—this will preserve user data

Update

I returned my MacBook for repair (Sticky key). Apple report it was caused by "Moisture ingress" not by my hand, not covered by warranty so do I want to pay for the repair? I refused the repair, when the MacBook was returned to me I Clean installed Catalina, re installed all my apps etc and funny old thing ALL my issues have gone away, Including the "Sticky key".

Guess it is just me?

Thanks for the guidance,

I ran through all of your suggestions, learned a lot in the process, Thank you. I did not find any serious problems but re installing OS Big Sur did get “Time machine” running. I made a back up but I’m not sure I want to use it as it may re install my software problems too?

Sent the macbook to apple to get the keyboard issues repaired, when it returns I think a “Clean install” of Big Sur may resolve the software problems. I’ve only had the macbook for 5 months so there’s not a lot to lose(Been there several times with windows).

Thanks again for the guidance I learnt a lot.
