If you had cleanmymac x, then that might be why. Otherwise, the files might have corrupted. If you ever want to try again, make sure you backup your data to a hard drive, then try again. If it fails, erase your iMac and install from macOS utilities (this time, press option command r. That’ll install Big Sur). Then when you setup, restore from time machine.
Maybe the update was corrupted. Maybe try reinstalling it via a bootable installer?

Keep is updated!
Shut down and hold shift command r upon power up. That’ll revert it if possible. If not, do option command r. That’ll reinstall macOS bug Sur. Good luck!😁
Hey Hussair,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! It looks like you haven't received an answer to your question. If you are able to provide additional information, then perhaps someone will be able to assist you. Some questions that might be helpful to answer are:
The more details you can share the better.
Take care.
Along the "IO Board Failure" line most are getting from Apple support; I decided to disprove their position. I removed the SSD from my Big Sur bricked Mid 2013 Macbook Air and swapped it into an identical, non Big Sur Macbook and low and behold, the same issue of continuous reboot occurs. Odd isn't it? So, if Apple support was correct, the IO Board in the second Mac should now be BAD. Unfortunately (for Apple), when the second Mac's SSD was returned to its rightful place, the non Big Sur Mac operated properly. Weird right!

So far Apple remains mute! I have had two apple imacs go belly up moving to Big Sur! The solution that worked cost me $$$ at an Apple certified repair facility about 100 mi, one way to have the tech move off of Big Sur back to Catalina! Both iMacs responded well to the adjustment. Where I am at a loss is how could apple developers not know this was going to happen. Any OS adjustments allowed or made available are normally checked by a quality engineering development organization and are "TESTED" for all upgrade problems! Obviously , THAT FELL SHORT, VERY SHORT and many apple users are now suffering with really no guidance from Apple! At least for myself, I had none and basically suggested to the certified repair center to back out of Big Sur!! And backing out was the solution!!!!
Big Sur here and an Epson WF-4740 - I spent untold hours for months trying to print different drivers, etc and finally turned off the firewall to get the driver installed, printed and then turned th firewall back on after it was working and it finnaly it works. Yippee skippy...
Yup... it seems like the update could’ve been corrupted. The solution is to reinstall it! My above instructions show how I reinstalled macOS when my parents computer bricked after the Big Sur update. Now, if you can’t access macOS Utilities, then erase your MacBook and do a clean install.

You can also just do the update manually when you are notified. You don't have to wait until it updates automatically. I don't leave my computer open (because cats) at night so I just do it at whatever time is convenient.
Add my Late 2013 Macbook Pro to the list of computers experiencing issues. I'm currently re-installing Big Sur after it continuously got stuck on a black Apple Loading screen. I've been avoiding these updates, but eventually new software requires them, so I went from a perfectly functional Catalina OS, to a completely broken Big Sur OS.
Re-installation is working thus far for me (says it has 15 minutes remaining). If it doesn't work, then I'll have to find a way to copy all my files and then I'll have to re-install everything. A massive headache I don't have time for, but there's no other option here. Either it works this second time around, or re-installation is the only way to un-brick the computer I've had that's worked for literally eight years (after battery replacements and a lot of TLC, of course, since Apple computers won't last this long without these things unless they were made in the early to mid 2000's.)
My late 2016 macbook pro worked flawlessly until I "up"graded to Big Sur. It was all down hill and I've spent countless hours fiddling with my computer to fix software and hardware issues over the phone with Apple. First was the battery. What would last an entire day pre-Big Sur wouldn't last more than an hour. I also noticed the computer was overheating and the fans would be running at max. Without exaggerating, I have never once since owning this MacBook heard the fans turn on, I was convinced they were just really really quiet. I also never had issues with the computer overheating either. Eventually resolved this with many failed calls to Apple support. The second issue that I am now dealing with is the screen. Immediately after "up"grading (it's really a downgrade), I noticed these 8 bright circles on the dock, where the screen was noticeably brighter almost as if little spotlights. I assumed this was just a new feature of the new OS. But I can guarantee this was not present pre-upgrade because I recall noticing it immediately and thinking it was strange. Here we are a few weeks later and now my screen will randomly go black even though the computer is still on. Initially it was only while in direct sunlight but has progressively gotten worse and I'm lucky if I can get the screen back on through a hard reset or re-start in recovery mode. Again after countless hours spent on the phone with Apple, they decided it needed to be looked at by an authorized service provider. The guy didn't even need to open the computer and pointed out those little spotlights on the dock immediately and said your screen is going and needs to be replaced, a near $1000 replacement. I can say with absolute certainty, these were not present (nor were the other issues I've encountered) pre-Big Sur. After reading this discussion thread I am even more convinced that Big Sur is quite literally destroying my hardware. After calling Apple yet again to remediate this as I refuse to pay for a problem that Apple created, my case was escalated to a supervisor who insists that Big Sur could not cause hardware issues. Currently in the process of getting a service report for my MacBook to make a case that the repair needs to be at Apple's expense since the malfunction is Apple's fault.
Interesting that so many IO Boards failed while doing a Big Sur install/update! In actuality, the update corrupted the SSD, but an admission of this would place liability directly with Apple, so “The IO Board failed!”
This says it all. I agree with you. It also seems as if they are not willing to admit there is a bug or that there has been a mistake. I took my MacBook Air back to the store after the screen went completely black for the second time in three months. (Both times it crashed in the middle of the update and no combination of key commands would restore it.) The man working there somehow got it revived there at the store (the first time they had to replace the IO board after the update). He said that for updates I shouldn’t close my laptop as it updates overnight and that is the problem. I am inclined to doubt that because I am not sure I trust Apple anymore, but next time there is an update I will try leaving the MacBook open in hopes this never happens again.
My Big Sur update stopped mid-installation and the recommended fixes (restart, restart in safe mode, restart a few other ways) didn't work. I spent hours on the phone with Apple, then finally took it to the Genius Bar. They said they would need to wipe the computer and start over, and since I also had a keyboard issue under warranty, they wanted to send it away to do both. Now I just got an email saying my "Unit will not boot, operating system is corrupted" and charging $428 + tax. Obviously, Big Sir corrupted my MacBook Air.
Addition: I just called customer support, and after a few holds and being transferred to a Senior Advisor, they say that the new OS "exposed" a previous flaw in the logic board, which now needs to be replaced. Less money than some people on here, but pretty bummed. I love my MacBook Air and hope this actually does fix the issue without ongoing problems people mention.
The number of "Big Sur" related problems continues to grow by Apple users who have upgraded from a working product to a Big Sur Brick. After my two "Big Sur Anomalies, I had Apple tech support do repairs and then back up to Catalina. And surprise, "No problems!"
