Yes. This was reported widely, including this article on 9to5mac.com here.

From March your older Apple TV can receive streaming of YouTube from another device such as an iPhone but not natively on the Apple TV version 3.

So either upgrade or stream it with AirPlay, it seems to me. Hadn't received nor seen any word of this until tonight - that link you provided was authored today, interestingly.

A1: It is Apple doing it

This is incorrect. YouTube (ie.Google) decide the devices on which YouTube is supported, and they announce with some lead time any discontinuation for users to prepare and examine alternatives. It must be noted that the now unsupported AppleTV is nine years old this month, a lengthy life for devices. The two supported models, which are much more capable, remain available for purchase. Like it or not, this is the nature of technology today. I have the even older 2nd Generation model (2010) which lost YouTube a couple of years ago so I do understand the irritation.

In addition to YouTube, other streaming services have stopped support for the 2012 Apple TV (3rd Generation) as reported here.

Apple or YouTube?:

Q1: "not sure if this is Apple or YouTune doing but I’m not happy.”

A1: It is Apple doing it — they are trying to get everyone to upgrade to newer devices. It’s the same ordeal as not being able to install an update, or install oder after upgrading.

Downgrading tvOS:

Q2: can I downgrade my tv os just to keep watching YouTube as before?

A2: I don’t know about the downgrade (and am I am not certain about downgrading a tvOS being an option to perform). But, get a new, former device (off of eBay or something), and the Apple TV would have the out-of-the-box tvOS.

AirPlay does not work properly, can only stream video in 720p from my phone... it looks terrible on my TV. Also, it is annoying to be draining my phone’s battery all the time just to stream a video to a device that is plugged to a wall socket.

The most recent Apple TV is a four year old device by this time and still has the original price?... not buying that.
