RAW files not downloading

I have a Nikon Z6II and a MacBook Pro. I can't for the life of me figure out how to download my RAW files onto the computer. I have updated to Big Sur. This is where the problem started. Before, I downloaded onto Nikon Capture NX-D and then converted to Photos. Now I can't even do that. Nikon says it's not their equipment. I have tried opening the files from the SD card on an older computer and that doesn't work either. In Photos I just get a grey blanked out thumbnail. I have never had this problem before with RAW files in an older Nikon.

The RAW support page for Big Sur is (Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur - Apple Support) is listing your camera as supported.

You should be seeing the RAW files on your card in the Finder, when you connect the card reader to a USB port. Can you drag the RAW files from your card into a folder on your Desktop?

Adobe'S DNG Converter is free and should be able to convert the RAWs to DNG, that you could use, if Photos cannot import the RAW files.

Have you changed any settings on your camera, for example the compression of the RAW files? Have you checked, if the card could be the problem and tried with a different card or card reader?

As a etst, can you download an image from the card, if you take a new file in the TIFF format or as a JPEG (just to test, if the Mac can read the card at all)?

Yes. I have tried jpegs and they download with no problem. I have ordered another SD card already to see if that’s the problem. The RAW files download to Nikon Capture NX-D with no problem but can’t be converted because Nikon has not updated it’s program to talk to Big Sur. Some say download Lightroom but that is not free. I don’t see why I should pay every month to see my pictures. Only jpegs can be downloaded, according to Nikon, onto iPhone. This is not correct because I used to do it with my old Nikon camera all the time.
