Smart Mailboxes - bug

I have tried to delete smart mailboxes and to add new ones over the last couple of weeks. I've been able to do this easily in the past. Every time I delete one or add one, the next time I restart the Mail app, the smart mail boxes reappear and my new ones vanish. I've tried everything, but can't see any way of stopping this. It's a fairly recent bug. I have the latest version of Big Sur 11.2.

Greenwhichch,

Thanks for the extra details. Since the overall issue is the Mail app saving changes, you may want to verify it's not an issue being created by settings or software issues. At this time, can you put the Mac in safe mode and see if you still have the same issue while in safe mode? Here's information on How to use safe mode on your Mac. Additionally, here are a few of the reasons to test in safe mode:

    • It performs First Aid on the startup volume and attempts to repair errors if it finds them.
    • It limits third-party kernel extensions from loading.
    • It disables auto-login and suppresses startup items and login items.
    • It deletes cache files that could potentially cause macOS issues.

If you continue to have the problem after testing in safe mode, you may want to Contact Apple for support and service directly.

Regards!

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Greenwhichch,

We're glad you were able to review your Smart Mailbox settings. We want to help to continue to narrow down your search for answers. What email account types are linked to your Mac? You can check this in System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Does the issue happen with all Mail accounts linked to the Mac?

If only one email account is experiencing this issue with the Smart Mailbox, you may want to try to remove the account and re-add it. Here's information on how to Add or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac.

Best regards!

Hi, I have an iCloud account, two Yahoo accounts and two Gmail accounts for emails. The Smart Mailboxes are account independent. For example, I have a smart mailbox to display all emails sent from a particular email address of a colleague. It works perfectly alright across all the accounts, but I can't delete this smart mailbox. If I delete it, it reappears the next time Mail is restarted ( either when the system boots up, or if Mail is Quit and restarted). Also I can't get it to assign a signature. It works when I assign one, but when Mail restarts, the signature has vanished again. Basically, Mail is ignoring these changes when it shuts down. It's only started doing this recently since Big Sur.
