Storage size issue when setting up a new Mac with Migration Assistant

I'm trying to set up a new MacBook Air (2020, M1) by transferring data wirelessly from my old MacBook Air (Mid-2013). Both are running Big Sur. I've tried several times and keep running into the same issue. Migration Assistant is telling me my old laptop has 1.7PB of data associated with my user account and my new laptop does not have enough storage to continue. Has anyone run into this issue before? Is there a way to transfer all of my data wirelessly instead of using another method (hard drive, ethernet, etc.)?

Hi bicho13,

Thanks for confirming there is ample space available.

From here, given the issue seems to be with how space is being read on your old Mac, we'd recommend running a check on the disk from Disk Utility. Take a look at the steps below to see how to boot up into macOS Recovery and access Disk Utility to run the check and repair if need be.

If the Mac returns no issues or states any issues were repaired, reboot and try running Migration Assistant again. If instead it does find an issue it cannot repair, we'd recommend backing up, erasing that disk and then reinstalling macOS.

Feel free to reach back out if you have any further questions.

Cheers!

Hi bicho13,

We see you'r attempting to transfer data from your old MacBook Air to your new one, however there is a discrepancy as to the available storage and the transfer won't complete.

To get started, can you confirm the used storage on your 2013 MacBook? You can check under the Apple in the menu bar > About This Mac > Storage. You'd see both the maximum storage of your internal disk and then the free space left available. While an estimate of over a petabyte of data to transfer is inaccurate, we would like to confirm there is enough storage on your new Mac to transfer data from the old one.

Additionally, in answer to your question, if you have a Time Machine backup of your data on your old Mac, you can use that backup to migrate your data to your new Mac if you prefer. After backing up your old Mac with Time Machine, plug the external drive into your new Mac and launch Migration Assistant. When it asks where you want to transfer your data from, select Time Machine at that point.

See more info about moving data from your old Mac to your new one below:
