Can't log in to iPhone with apple ID

When I go to settings, I am prompted to sign in to the Apple ID. When I try to do so, the little *just a moment* circle spins and then it just goes back to the log in screen as if nothing happened. No error message.


If I go to 'manage my Apple ID' on my PC, it shows I'm signed in on the iPhone. Also, I am getting apple ID verification code prompts on the iPhone when I try to sign in to apple services on my PC. This would indicate that I am signed in on the iPhone.



Both of these screenshots are from the same phone. How can I not be signed in with an apple ID yet still receive Apple ID verification prompts on the phone? Here's a shot from 'manage my Apple ID'. The iPhone on the far right is the device in question.



As you can see, even Apple Pay is set up on the phone, which surely requires my Apple ID be working.

I'm logged in on several iPads and on the PC (iCloud) with my Apple ID. What could the problem be?

That KB article doesn't apply to my situation. I don't have a reachability issue. I can load the app store fine and request to update or download apps fine. The thing I can't do is authenticate my user ID and password.


Here are the checks mentioned on that page:


  1. Check the system status page
  2. Make sure that your device is connected to the Internet.
  3. Update your software
  4. Check the date and time


My responses to those:


  1. I can authenticate from my iPad and PC, as I mentioned in the OP, so the apple ID system seems to be ok.
  2. Yeah, I'm connected. If I weren't connected to the internet, I wouldn't even be able to load the app store and browse the apps.
  3. I'm on iOS12.5.1 and there is no notification that I need to update. But I don't really understand this suggestion - even if I were on 12.5.0, that version surely is still valid & supported, isn't it?
  4. The phone is getting date and time from the network and it appears to be correct compared to my other devices.


So just to reiterate, it's not a network/connection/reachability issue, it's an authentication issue.
