I can't change my account name since it is grayed out

I put my nickname before for my account name, and I no longer use that nickname and would like to change my account name, however, when I try to change it, it grayed out and I can't change it, what should I do?

DON'T attempt to change your account name. Far too often you get locked out of your Mac permanently.

Instead, create a new Admin user with a name you prefer, log in with that, and copy your files over to the new Account. if everything is working without going back to the old account after a week, THEN you can delete the old Account.
