2017 macbook pro backlight issues

Experiencing issues with my 2017 13-inch macbook display. Backlight in screen stops working when I move the screen beyond a 90-degree angle to the keyboard. Took it in to apple repair shop to see what the issue might be. They advised it is an issue with the backlight cable and that the whole screen would need to be replaced to fix it (which would cost me about $1000). Apple technician said if my computer was a 2016 model he could fix it for free, but when I asked what the change was between the 2016 and 2017 model that limited that free repair all he could answer is "they fixed the issue".

Looking around on google, seems like this is a pretty common problem for my model macbook (not just limited to the 2016 model as the technician made it sound). Does anyone know why apple isn't covering the repairs for the 2017 model, even though it has the exact same issues as the 2016 model?

This computer model seems to be plagued with issues. I've only just had the keyboard repaired under recall because of the faulty butterfly keys, and in less then 7 months the display has now stopped functioning correctly.

Unfortunately Apple's revised Display Cable still has some issues although the issue is not as common as it was with the 2016 models. I know that doesn't do you any good though. I'm not sure what region you are in, but in the US the cost should only be about $600 to replace the Display Assembly on a MBPro 13" (2017) as long as there is no accidental damage.
