Why does my MacBook Pro storage say that it only has 245 gb and 251 gb

Ok so basically I have 2 question regarding my macbook's storage.

First of all, why does my MacBook Pro storage say that it only has 245 gb and 251 gb when I bought the 256 gb model? It doesn't make sense at all.

Second of all, why does my photos app take up around 55 gb when there's nothing in it. There were videos in it before but I deleted all fo them since I didn't need it anymore.

Can someone help cause I'm afraid I'll use up all the storage soon.

That pretty Graphic User Interface is not so accurate and takes many liberties with your sensibilities.

Try something like OmniDiskSweeper for a GUI to get a good look at itemized file size and location:

OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more

If you use the Terminal.app— You get a better overview here, copy and paste:

diskutil list internal

If you want to drill down on your user and the system:

File size— list the items in the home folder with the sizes, including invisible items, copy & paste:

sudo du -h -d 1 ~/

File size—will list the items in root with the sizes, including invisible items, copy & paste:

sudo du -h -d 1 /
