recovering an iPhone backup on an older device

I had an iPhone 6S for work last year, that I used to back-up on my mac. Now I changed work and have given this 6s back to my previous company and I would like to recover at least the photographs from my backup, to put them on an old iPhone 5S.

The system tells me that it is not possible to use the backup with the iphone I have.

So my question is : how can I at least get the pictures back that were on my previous iPhone 6S from the backup I have ?

You can't restore the backup of a device which runs a higher iOS version to a device running a lower iOS version. And iPhone 5S cannot be updated to the version you ran on the 6S. If you synced your photos with iCloud, go to www.icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID and Password and see if the photos are there. If they are, you can restore them to the 5S. If they aren't, you'll likely not be able to get them back unless the previous company is willing to help you.

OR.......get a newer more modern phone capable of running the newer iOS versions.

Thanks for the confirmation. Well actually, I DO have a newer phone (well, a SE 1st edition but it

keeps the pace), with pictures on it I don't want to erase. I thought I could use my old 5S as a receptacle for the pictures I had on my previous professional phone but as you state clearly it doesn't seem possible.

I just want the pictures, so I might use a third party app to do the job, open and scan my old backups and extract pictures, but these apps are expensive. Well, I might buy one, I'll see. It seems there is no free app to do this job, unfortunately. Pity that Apple does not plan such a situation.

I can't offer any guidance on whether these applications you might buy can work. As to Apple anticipating this, I suspect the number of people ever going from a more modern device to an older less modern device is not often.
