magic keyboard doesn't work without being plugged in

Hi,

My magic keyboard, which is new, only works when I have it plugged into my computer, which is super inconvenient. I've tried the steps to set it up several times and I think it's working, but then when I unplug it, it's no longer recognized. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
