Can my iMac make a phone call without an iPhone?
I only have an iMac. Is it possible to use it to make phone calls? All the instructions I see include linking to an iPhone, which I don't have.

I use Skype all the time calling family who do not have Skype: I make Skype calls to landlines or cell phones. I do not have a monthly plan, it is simply through their app on my computer or iPad.
And no, you cannot email.
Here is what is available; click on the "get Skype credit"
https://www.skype.com/en/international-calls/
You buy the "credit" and make calls using the app; the call will be deducted from your credit. Most of my international calls are 2.3 cents per minute.
that is not what they want to do. Skype and/or zoom would otherwise work for them. they want to connect to a landline.
I understand that the person on the other end of Skype would also have to be a Mac user. Facetime's the same:
"FaceTime for Mac is completely free and as long as the person you’re calling has an Apple device supporting FaceTime"
So how would I call someone who's using a SamSung device, for example?
To clarify -- Can I use my email address (as opposed to telephone number) to use Skype. And if I'm calling to another person using their email address as a destination, with both having the ap installed, is it free?
as far as i can tell it's no less or more secure than any other conferencing service. as far as spam, i haven't received a single spam e-mail from them. if you want, you can look at Zoom Video Conferencing.
This is getting less and less clear. And, I found this:
Can you use Skype with just an email address? Yes, it's possible as long as the email address is registered as a Skype account and you will pick the calls up on the Skype application.
I don't want to use phone numbers (as you do) because if you use a land line, that will generate a charge, which I don't want, and I want to call someone who only has a land line.

BTW, I attempted to look into Zoom but the email they send to verify your request never arrived (I tried three times).
did you check your "junk" folder for the e-mail?
FWIW, i don't think zoom has the functionality to call land lines. you would need to look at their FAQs.
We're getting off topic here.
I want to communicate by voice or video, doesn't matter, with someone who does not have a Mac.
Therefore I can't use Facetime.
Skype makes its money by offering certain features. It would seem according to what I have read that those are not features I'm interested in. However, I'm confused by the screen shot sent above that's looking for a phone number. I'm hoping that's just an option.
My response to this comment disappeared and the one to your comment above it appeared instead.
My comment to this one was: What? This makes no sense. You're talking about using Skype and Zoom at the same time?
Just a note to thank all the people who tried to be helpful here through my confusion. It would seem to be a simple project but remarkably, plain, logical, relatively complete basic introductory information needed for the uninformed is not readily accessible in one place for Skype. I did start at the Skype page, but the way it described itself made it appear that it was useful only to Windows users. And it talked about how you sign up, which didn't connect for me with how you use it. Again, a vocabulary problem, causing us all to go more deeply into the weeds than should have been necessary.
Ordinarily I just jump into new software with all four feet and muddle through just fine. But since this would also involve someone else who doesn't handle new things as well, I wanted to be completely clear.
So thank you all. Again, Apple people rule.

not true. Skype is cross platform.
Can you use Skype to make email to email calls?
I was wondering about Zoom instead but see lots of warnings about privacy. I get so much spam as it is. Your experience?
Of course I checked there.
As I keep on saying, I don't want to call the land line. The person has a Galaxy and that's what I want to communicate with
if that's the case, have them get the Skype app for their galaxy. but YOU said specifically that they had only a landline on page 1.
That's because on another website (perhaps it was an old one) that said there would be a charge for calling landlines (as opposed to mobiles).
