MacBook Pro Fans always on.

I purchased a top spec'd MacBook Pro 16in February 2020. 64gig Ram and 8tb SSD. Top everything. It cost an arm and a leg (Especially here in Australia) but I felt at the time it was well worth it. I am a composer and was working on a TV Series and this machine smashed it! What AMAZED when I first bought the machine, was quiet it was, how the FANS Never came on! I have the machine connect to a 4k Display and HDMI TV through a OWC Thunderbolt 3 HUB and connected to a Soundcard (RME) and a UAD audio processor. This is pretty standard in the music industry for a notebook setup.

A year on, still running Catalina and although I've had software updates, my hardware configuration and software has essentially not changed.

The FANS now are 90% of the time on! Even when browsing safari and nothing else. I've done the usual SMC resets and the obvious. I've looked at activity monitor and nothing seems out of place.

BUT THE FANS ARE ON!!

Why has this change occurred with such a noticeable difference?

Last year it was "WOW this thing is amazing it has way more grunt than I'll need and the fans don't even come on" and now its like, "Wow this Fan noise is annoying as all heck!"

The performance however seems unchanged,....still works great.

If I open a logic session from a year ago and today, the CPU seems to be the same,....but the noise!

Anyone have something similar? I appreciate that in the music industry this might be a bit "specialised" but still,.....

It passes the diagnostics fine.

Kind regards,

Hylton

Run Disk Utility on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility click on "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid reports everything as "Ok" click "Show Details" and look through the report to see if there are any unfixed errors listed. If there are unfixed errors listed, then you will need to erase the whole physical SSD and restore from backup or clone.

Try connecting the charger to the right side USB-C ports. I've seen reports that using the charger on the left side USB-C ports can cause the CPU to run at 100% and the fans to run at high speed.

To check for possible software issues run EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

See if the problem still exists when you disconnect the external device(s) in case one of them is causing the problem.
