Time machine backups, freeing up space

Can I move old time machine backups on my backup disk to another location?

I tried to backup on time machine but it said: freeing up space, and it just wasn't working.

So I tried to help it by putting some old backups into the bin on my Mac. Apparently a big nono.

Now the bin won't empty.

Can I slide the latest backup onto another disk or in the Cloud, before I clean up my backup hard drive?

Thanks for reaching out giffer,

We understand you have some questions about your Time Machine backup.

Time Machine backups are designed to manage themselves. When the drive Time Machine is backing up to becomes full, it will automatically remove the old of the backups to make room for new ones. This can be a time consuming process.

Alternatively, you can connect a new drive, and select it as your Time Machine disk, and keep the full drive as an archive should you ever need to restore older data.

The following page offers additional information on the subject: If the Time Machine backup disk for your Mac is full

iCloud is available primarily as a way to sync data between devices, and is not intended as a backup of your Mac.

Regarding being unable to empty the Trash bin, try placing the files back in their original locations.

We hope this helps!
