How to gain access to old iPhone

I have an iPhone 4 which I haven’t used in years. I currently have an iPhone 7. I have tried three times to gain access to see the pictures on the iPhone 4. It asks for a four digit code. I’ve tried three different codes and each time the phone doesn’t accept my code and tells me to try later. Please let me know what I have to do to gain access

Unfortunately for the photos all the solutions for deleting the passcode also involve erasing the entire device. It's so a thief stealing the phone can't get access to your private data.
