Radio station won't play over Airplay (playlists work fine over Airplay)

When I select a Radio Station in Music version 1.0.6.10 on macOS Catalina 10.15.7 it only plays on the computer, not via Airplay.

Airplay works fine when I play a playlist or album or any song, so Airplay itself works.

It is just that even if I turn off output from Music.app to the computer and have only output from Music.app to the Airplay device selected, the output still goes to the computer.

I have a workaround in that I can use the Sound System Settings to redirect the computer sound to the Airplay device, but of course that is not how it is supposed to work.

This seems like a Music.app bug to me. Is it?

Hey Gerben Wierda,

We understand you're unable to AirPlay radio stations in Apple Music.

This seems to be expected behavior for some playlists. Live streams won't be able to be played over AirPlay. This includes stations like Beats 1, but curated playlists should be able to be played this way.

In iTunes I was able to listen to live streams and I had a collection of internet radio stations. This is no longer part of the functionality. We now only have Apple's own curated stations. Which is fine, I guess, as long as the curation is minimal.

But it is beyond me why Apple would want to intentionally cripple ("expected behaviour" — hah!) the Airplay (Apple technology!) functionality of Music.app but my guess would be that if it is intentional there are lawyers involved and in that case giving feedback is useless.

Apple's soul — its 'why' — is to provide the ultimate user experience. This is either a bug, or some soul has been lost.

Maybe there is another app that let me listen to internet radio based on an URL (as iTunes was capable of).
