Why does crackling/distorted sounds come from my speaker when using video chat on Safari (iPad 8).

When I used a video chat through Safari on my iPad 8 the other person's voice comes across as crackling and distorted. This only happens through Safari. The speaker sounds great with music, movies, FaceTime, and phone calls.

Does it happen if you use a different browser (e.g. Firefox)? If so, the problem is with the chat service you're using.
