I have a 21.5" iMac Mid 2010 3.06 GHz i3. OS X Yosemite. Now it will not open many websites in Safari. Any advice on how to upgrade this desktop.

This would be because of your older web browser and OS. You will need to upgrade to MacOS High Sierra. Use this link, How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support, and choose High Sierra and upgrade.
Just backup first!

Have you tried another web browser besides safari? I often try to connect to cnn.com or Apple.com to make sure my network configuration is correct. Can you connect to either? What kind of error are you getting when it doesn't connect?

Delete "Install macOS High Sierra" from the Applications folder. Try once more while in Safe Mode.

Yesy cnn and Apple work burt say Linkedin and Bank Of America say cannot obtain secure connection.

I did that but now it says that the copy of Sierra is damaged and cannot be used.
I will try one more to download a better file.
Still does not install after download. Message is the file is damaged.
