Fn Key not working

Hello,

I recently got a new external keyboard where the Fn key is necessary for some keystrokes to change the colors of the LEDs. However, when I connect it to my mac it remaps the Fn key to the command key. I have tried changing it in the preferences>keyboard>modifier keys, but it does not work. I used Ukulele to see what the keys represented translated to the mac keyboard and none of the keys (ctrl, fn, alt, windows key) equate to the Fn key. Anyone know how I can change it/remap it?

Hi, dmappp,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you are having trouble with the Fn keys on your MacBook Pro while using a third party external keyboard. We are happy to help.

First, we would suggest checking with the manufacturer to make sure the keyboard you have is compatible with your version of macOS. Then, we'd recommend seeing if the following articles help:

Use keyboard function keys on Mac - Apple Support

Change the behavior of the modifier keys on Mac - Apple Support

Use the Keyboard Viewer on Mac - Apple Support

Don't hesitate to respond back if you still need help with the following information:

  1. What keyboard model are you using?
  2. Do all the other keys seem to work as expected?
  3. Does the keyboard work on another Mac?

Best.
