Installing Windows 10 on MacBook Pro 2017 (Catalina)

Am I able to place a downloaded version from MS of Windows 10 on my hard drive and the bootcamp assistant will be able to load it from there?

I assume you are referring to a W10 Installer. If yes, you need a Microsoft ISO, in any location other than Downloads on your Mac, which BC Assistant can be pointed to. Do not use a USB created by Windows Media Creation Tool in macOS.
