iCal vs. Gmail calendar issue

I received a meeting invitation to my Gmail account (default calendar on iPhone 11 Pro Max and also Apple ID) from a friend's iCloud account. The invitation should have gone to my Gmail inbox/calendar but it didn't, instead, 20min later, it popped up on my iCal app on the iPhone and only shows up on iCal, I can't even more it to my default Gmail calendar. I don't use the iCal calendar, only Gmail, so I can do manually create the event on my Gmail. Is there a way to make sure that any invitations to my Gmail only go to my Gmail calendar and not iCal?

iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14

Hi again arnab11,

From the Gmail article we shared, it appears you have to accept Gmail calendar invitations through an email. This issue may be arising because of your Gmail email address and your Apple ID being one and the same. Since the invitation was sent from an iCloud calendar event, it might have defaulted to an iCloud event for you as well, depending on how your friend shared the event and has your contact saved in their device.

To avoid this issue in the future, you could change your Apple ID to a different email address if you like. Learn about that here: Change your Apple ID

You could also make sure your iCloud Calendars are off in Settings > Your Name > iCloud and turn off Calendars.

This response is not helpful. The invitation came through only to my iCal on my iPhone 11 Pro Max - there was no email invitation to my iCloud or Gmail inboxes, so I had to accept it via the iCal app on my phone. As I mentioned above, there was no way to view the invitation on my Gmail calendar b/c it never went through to my Gmail, which is the only place I want it to show up. This has never happened before and I'm not sure how it's even possible.

Yes, I know that for Google Calendar, one needs to accept it via email but the email invitation never went through - regardless of whether or not my Gmail email is my iCloud email - if a calendar invitation is sent to my Gmail, it should go to my Gmail and not my iCal. Also, iCloud calendar was already turned off in my Settings.

This seems like a bug in iOS rather than a problem at my end. Gmail is my primary email and I want it to be linked to my Apple ID - I don't want to have to create a new email to link to my Apple ID just to fix this issue that is clearly not my fault. Also, if anything, I'd change my Apple email to my iCloud email address but Apple doesn't allow this for whatever reason, it has to be an external email.

Hi there arnab11,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you received an invite to a calendar to your Gmail account, but it went to your iCloud account instead. Is your Apple ID your Gmail email address? Was the original calendar created by your friend an iCloud calendar?

Learn more about shared calendars here: Share iCloud calendars on iPhone.

We hope this helps!

Yes that is correct. My Gmail is my AppleID as well. The original invitation was created on the iCal app on my friend's iPhone and it came from his iCloud email which I'm guessing is his default email/calendar on his phone.

We aren't trying to share calendars, this is about meeting invitations. So the link you provided doesn't seem to have any explanation to why the calendar invitation didn't go to my Gmail.
