SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Mac Mini M1 16GB keeps crashing and then restarting randomly on all applications with following error message:

I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

I bought the new Macbook Pro with M1Max on the day of the launch (2021-10-26).

During the last 4 weeks, I've seen this crash at least 5 times.

I haven't had any external drives connected except for the first week (And back then, I didn't see any crash). In fact, I've had very few external devices connected at all. Most of the time, i have only the charger connected. Today, it happened on battery (Not a single cable connected).

So sadly, this seems to happen on the M1 Pro chips as well. Anyone else seen this on M1Pro/Max?

As an aside, isn't rather likely that "SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)" basically just means that something in the M1 SOC has gone sour, and caused a watchdog reboot?

I mean, it could be that we're looking at (possibly a lot of) different issues, some of which may be related to USB, while others are not? Perhaps that's why the experience varies a bit.

For me, it seems pretty random. The common denominator I can think of is that I have Parallels machines open, but I pretty much always use parallels for work, so it might also be totally unrelated.

It happened twice this week - a random reboot while computer was not actively being used. Not only has problem not gone away or gotten better with multiple OS updates, anecdotally it has gotten worse on my M1 Mac Mini running latest Big Sur. (Can't switch to Monterrey yet since hardware/software I need is not yet compatible.)

I bought a Macbook Air 2020 M1 4 months ago and have not had any problems until yesterday, when it just completely shut down and will not restart. I had just updated the OS last week to the newest system, the battery was at 60%, and I did have a USB port plugged in at the time of the crash. Now it's a paperweight. Taking it into the shop tomorrow to see what can be done.

I purchased an M1 MBAir in October 2021 and it was rock solid until early December when I started to get unexplained crashes and Kernel Panics. Today was the first SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired). No devices were attached and the machine was just sitting idle with Mail and Safari open in the background. I am running OS 11.6.2 with 16 GB x 1TB.

Woke up today to the SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired) error. This was the first time it has happened on my 2020 Mac Mini M1 (purchased last March).

Big Sur 11.6. Peripherals are OWC Thunderbolt hub with external TB SSD attached but not on. Loxije D3 DAC connected via USB directly to the Mini. Old Apple Thunderbolt display connected with Apple TB2 - TB3 adapter and with Apple USB keyboard and a Logitech marble mouse plugged into it. Also connected is an Apple BT trackpad. Nothing has changed in months, no new hardware or software and all peripherals were turned off except the OWC Hub.

I just wanted to add some more data to this thread. Hopefully this isn't the start of something bad. So far the Mac Mini has performed flawlessly. I will also send in a support request since the more they get the more attention this may get.
