Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

After one visit overnight at an Apple repair partner (find nothing), one send in to Apple (find nothing), 100 resets and new and fresh installations the f… was still going on…. 6 phonecalls and many mails later, next send in to Apple, got it back after a week, complete new logicboard…. And, what could I say. Still working since that day. Shame on Apple, that it had took so much energy to get good support!

FOLLOW UP - Sent my '21 M1 Pro 14 in. Shipping the box to me took less than 24 hours, and returning it to me also took less than 24 hours.

According to the receipt, they replaced the trackpad completely, and one other component which their description made sound like video RAM (but do not quote me on that).

Since receiving it back, it has been the laptop I always dreamed it would be.

Moral: if possible, send it in for hardware diagnostic, this was not a software issue in my case.

2020 M1, been happening more and more frequently. The last time the glitchy noise made during the crash blew the left speaker, which now sounds tinny at higher than half volume. I assume I'll be ignored at an Apple store since it's past the 1-year warranty? Pretty crazy to have no recourse for a +$1000 laptop with a clear hardware defect that's damaging other hardware.

I had the same problem with random reboots on M1 Mini, SOCD report and USB C failed port. Apple products are no longer reliable. I have owned many Mac computers since the late 80's and have never purchased the extended warranty because they never failed. I took the machine to the local Apple store. The managers said if I was even one day past the 1 year warranty, there would be a cost for any repairs. They told me they could replace the logic board for $450 or I could buy a new machine since I was a month past the 1 year warranty. Apple knows the M1 mini has had defective logic boards but still plays hardball past the warranty. Basically, you must spend more money for an extended warranty when buying the computer because Apple computers are not reliable like they used to be. Lesson learned. Buy something else or plan to spend more money up front on the chance that an Apple product will fail, and they will fail. Terrible customer service and company policy.

Just had another unexpected reboot, this time I was at the computer and the screen flashed green then it restarted. But it didn't provide any error message or opportunity to report it.

I chatted with Apple support online and the person clearly has instructions to escalate these cases because as soon as I described it and let them know that I had already booted into safe mood and done some other basic troubleshooting they said "escalation is the right path to get this resolved" and that it's "not the expected behaviour of the device."

So everyone please report your issue to Apple, make sure they know so they can fix this and do a recall and repair program.
