Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

Mac mini (M1, 2020) I have this problem too. After over 10 years trouble free out of my first mac, the problem is a real disappointment. I have a western hard drive , but it makes no difference whether it is in or out.

After the previous updates I think it happened once. When I first had the mac it was more frequent but one of the updates kept it at bay for a long time.

I am certain it is a graphics card issue. My screen over the past 2 weeks (after the latest update 11.52 20G95) the screen has gone blank 3 times. I had to restart once & it was ok for a while, but it was more frequent over the past couple of days, so I restarted yesterday & today green screen of death and an auto reboot, I was right in the middle of something as well. Now I have to plug the hard disk into my Ubuntu laptop because when the machine crashes, I get an error & the disk won't connect. What a joke.

If they want me to start installing & messing around, I'll be sending an invoice. Paid top dollar for this and Apple are all out of goodwill at the present time with me.

My MacBook Air has been pretty solid since I got it. I have it plugged into an OWC hub, with a USB C to DisplayPort cable to my LG 32" monitor, along with an ACASIS external TB/USB 4 drive, with a WD SN750 drive installed. It's not quite a month yet and I can recall about 2 times when it crashed while using it and probably 3 times that I left it asleep and came back and found it had crashed. To be honest, I use my wife's laptop more as it is more accessible, mine is connected to the hub and used as a "desktop". This setup is my replacement for the Mac Mini I wanted to use as a desktop replacement for my old 2009 Mac Pro, until the Pro laptops come out.

Has anyone installed this update that came out yesterday (well, that's when I noticed it)?

Device Support Update

This update ensures proper updating and restoring for iOS and iPadOS devices with a Mac.

There wasn't much info on what it does but wanted to see if that does anything to resolve this issue. The last crash I got, I forgot to take note of what the cause was. Let me know if this update aids with this issue.

Mine was having the issue right out of the box. I bought the Mac Mini from the refurbished store, it would crash during the setup, which I got through by using a portable USB C/Thunderbolt monitor. It was the most frustrating few days. When I took it in to the store to return, one of the folks wanted me to setup an appointment to speak with someone at the Genius Bar. I replied, I spent many days messing with it and don't want to fix it, since it came out of the box like that, I wanted a refund. He processed it and later I ordered the MacBook Air. It has been working great and I am happy with it.

Let's hope they find a fix for the issue for all those suffering from it.

I have exactly the same problem. I've had my M1 Mac mini for a few months and it will panic and restart every three to five days, or thereabouts. I tried disabling 3rd party kexts (Avast and DriveDX) but that didn't help. More recently I've removed my USB C 4-port hub but, as my current uptime is only 4 hours, it's too early to tell if this will make a difference. I still have an 8TB drive plugged into one of the USB ports, and a hub plugged into the other, in addition to two LG monitors (one running through the USB C port, the other through HDMI).

iMac 24-inch,M1, 2021, 16GB/1TB

We took delivery in mid-July, and today we experienced our first "SOCD...AP watchdog expired" episode with an involuntary restart. I have a 320 GB Seagate HDD connected via an adapter for Time Machine backup. Aside from an issue with the display resolution zooming in and out by itself yesterday, we have had no problems at all. I will continue to monitor and will update if this glitch continues to occur.
