SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Mac Mini M1 16GB keeps crashing and then restarting randomly on all applications with following error message:

I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

still happening for me on mac mini m1 8/256. frustrating because i thought this platform would offer stability. i don't like when my workstation crashes in the middle of something at random. it can be very costly.

this issue really seems to be a low level bug with m1 and legacy usb. i really wanted to like m1 but feel like it's time to switch to something more reliable.

Frequent shutdowns / resets create their own problems. My Time Machine drive sometimes stops working and goes read-only, when I shutdown or restart. It can sometimes be corrected by another restart, but often it needs to be reinitialized. Also, my USB devices always disappear when I restart the computer. This requires me to re-plug the USB cable after each restart.

Apple is in the process of shipping me my THIRD M1 Mac mini. Hopefully I will have better results.

Welp, I really hope this finally gets fixed in an OS update, and soon.

I was seriously contemplating returning my M1 Mac mini solely because of this SOCD watchdog bug, as my return window is closing imminently. As someone who relies on constantly transferring data between externals, it's an absolute deal breaker for me. It just happened to me again the other night, right after a fresh restart...the 4th time in the few weeks I've owned this Mac. The last incident, it was WHILE I was transferring data. So now this bug has me constantly afraid that my system will glitch out and reset during a disk write, corrupting the data on one of my drives.

I've loved absolutely everything else about using this M1 Mac, but having to constantly fear that your system is gonna go haywire randomly and possibly corrupt your data is just a big no-no. And yes, I do have all my important data backed up through multiple avenues.

I've had my Mac Mini M1 for a few weeks now and while it has rebooted on its own a few times I didn't look into why until today. I got the same brief error in the log as everyone else. I have numerous things connected to the USB (Mics, KBs, and Cameras) but no USB drives (yet). I am migrating to it from an MBP which has a time machine drive. So I'm hoping this gets resolved before I connect a drive for backing up.

I had this same crash (SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired). It had the static, crackling sound and then rebooted. Machine is M1 MacBook Air 16GB, 1TB storage, running 11.4.

It occurred in the middle of the night, while the machine was idle and had been for an hour or so (although Chrome, Evernote, and Slack were open). I do not have an external drive connected. I do, however, have a CalDigit TS3 Plus dock connected. It has Ethernet and a monitor (DisplayPort) connected. The dock also provides power to the machine. I've had this machine for about a month and this is the first occurance.

I can add my specs, not that it's terribly useful either.

  • Mac mini (M1 2020)
  • 16 GB memory
  • 256 GB storage
  • Big Sur 11.4
  • Never migrated from anything, but activated with an iCloud account that had 30-50GB of crap in iCloud Drive folders synced to the desktop
  • Peripherals:
    • HDMI: Main monitor (LG 24U58-B, EDID identical to the 27" model, so both claim to be 27")
    • USB-C 1: Second monitor via DisplayPort to USB-C cable (Dell P2414H)
    • USB-C 2: Sabrent EC-T3NS equipped with a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB M.2 SSD
    • USB 3.0 1: Powered USB 3.0 hub, which also has both an unpowered USB 3.0 switchable hub and the P2414H's USB 2.0 hub plugged into it
    • USB 3.0 2: Apple SuperDrive that Apple stopped identifying the model name of thanks to System Integrity Protection (It used to come up with the correct name on Intel Macs when it was plugged in prior to booting.)
    • Ethernet cable (I always use Ethernet with desktops anyway. But not only is the WiFi unforgivably bad, so is the Bluetooth!)

Updated to 11.5 the other day and this bug just happened to me again today. And once again, it was during a file transfer to an external HDD. I will be setting up a return and refund for my M1 Mac mini as I can't stress enough how fatal this can be to a hard drive in terms of data corruption. This time, my system froze and the screen flashed pink instead of green before restarting. I sent the diagnostic report to Apple, as I have been doing in the past.

I will monitor this thread and OS updates to see if this ever gets fixed, but for now I cannot use these M1 systems in their current state with these random, haphazard reboots. Hopefully this bug doesn't persist into Apple's upcoming M1X/M2 computers.

I have a MacBook Air (M1, 2020), running Big Sur 11.5.1 (up-to-date version for August 5, 2021).

Mac just shut down and restarted on itself. Samsung T7 SSD connected directly to Mac via Samsung USB-C USB-C original cable. SSD used for TimeMachine. TimeMachine working at the moment of crash. Error reported after restart: AP watchdog expired. I've sent report to Apple.

Whatever engineers fixed in pervious versions of Big Sur was not enough. Problem still present.

Aug 17, 2021 1:24 PM in response to ampex

Updated to 11.5.2 yesterday and just got my first green screen reboot in over a month.

Previously only had this green screen reboot when I had my USB Blu-Ray Drive plugged in to read some old media. This time just happened with my SanDisk SSD, Keyboard and Mouse plugged in. (never did it before with that)

Happened while watching Twitch, last time it happened was with Twitch or Youtube (I forget). Anybody else notice it happening with video playing?
