Can I use a 2011 Imac as a Display screen for a Mac Mini

I currently have a Mid 2011 iMac running High Sierra. Will I be able to use this as a display screen for a Mac Mini should I decide to purchase?

Reading other answers to this question in the community would appear to say yes.

However a phone conversation with Apple Support said no (but they didn't seem terribly certain).

Has anyone actual user experience on this please?

Hmm all very confusing to me.

Apple support via telephone said tentatively "No" to my query.

Apple support via Chat said "Yes"to the same query.

My iMac is 2011 and is running High Sierra

My iMac has a Thunderbolt port

The M1 Mac Mini has a Thunderbolt port.

So with a connecting cable should this not work?

"the new Mac's can not use a supported iMac as a display". - is this the problem?

Thanks for your clarification.
