Ipads use for Navigation on Boats

I use my Ipad 10.2 for Navigation on my sailing boat. It is always plugged into the 12V system but the software is using the battery faster than it is getting recharged so by the end of the day my Ipad is dead! I believe that this is because the Ipad will not accept charging at more than 2 amps but I'm no expert!


I am looking at buying the Ipad 12 Pro (as I'd like the bigger screen) to replace it but cannot work out if I will have the same problem. I see that it has an 18W charging facility but can't see if that would either help or be useable on a 12v system .


Can anyone help me please?

With the exception of iPad8 and iPad mini5, the current models of iPad Air and iPad Pro support USB-PD (Power Delivery).


When used with an appropriate power adapter, the USB-PD compliant Power Adapters can charge compatible iPad devices at 18W (i.e. 1.5A @12V). If using a standard USB Power Adapter, charging is limited to 12A (2.4A @5V).


If using iPad for navigation, I presume that you are aware that only WiFi+Cellular models of iPad include GPS capabilities; WiFi Only models of iPad do not have any GPS - and this can negatively impact Mapping/Chart-plotting Applications.
