Your passcode is required to enable Face ID - asked frequently

iPhone 12mini - recently updated to iOS 14.4

It isn't that my face id doesn't work but several times an hour I need to type in my pin to unlock.

I wasn't having this issue before the latest iOS

I have cleaned off the screen.

I tried the alternate face id feature as sometimes I have reading glasses on.

I tried altering some of the other attention settings - to no avail

I see a "Require Passocde" in the Face ID & Passcode - with Immediately checked but no way to uncheck it

Any other suggestions?

Hello nomis313,

It sounds like you are frequently being asked to put in your passcode when using Face ID.

Here are some resources on this topic:

From "If you need to enter your passcode" in If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro "You might need to enter your passcode or Apple ID instead of using Face ID in these situations:

    • You're wearing a face mask.
    • The device has just been turned on or restarted.
    • The device hasn’t been unlocked for more than 48 hours.
    • The passcode hasn’t been used to unlock the device in the last six and a half days and Face ID hasn't unlocked the device in the last 4 hours.
    • The device has received a remote lock command.
    • After five unsuccessful attempts to match a face.
    • After initiating power off/Emergency SOS by pressing and holding either volume button and the side button simultaneously for 2 seconds."

When you have a FaceID turned on, the Required Passcode can only be set to Immediately. From Set a passcode on iPhone. "For additional security, however, you must always enter your passcode to unlock your iPhone under the following conditions:

    • You turn on or restart your iPhone.
    • You haven’t unlocked your iPhone for more than 48 hours.
    • You haven’t unlocked your iPhone with the passcode in the last 6.5 days, and you haven’t unlocked it with Face ID or Touch ID in the last 4 hours.
    • Your iPhone receives a remote lock command.
    • There are five unsuccessful attempts to unlock your iPhone with Face ID or Touch ID.
    • An attempt to use Emergency SOS is initiated (see Make emergency calls on iPhone).
    • An attempt to view your Medical ID is initiated (see Create and share your Medical ID in Health on iPhone)."

Hope this information helps.

Have a good day.
