umount process 100%

Big Sur, MBP 15" 2015. All updates are installed.

umount process starts occasionally daily and loads processor 100% as long as I let it run. Usually I have a USB hub with two external HDDs connected, one for Time Machine and one for work files, plus a NAS, all WD drives. When umount starts running unmounting the USB disks is possible but takes a few minutes each and unmounting them doesn't stop the process. This problem started soon after updating to Big Sur and changing the SD from original 500 Gb to 1 Tb Aura Pro at the same time.

Force stopping the process takes a few minutes and after that everything is fine until the next time, maybe later the same day or tomorrow. It happens even when I don't have the external HDDs connected except the NAS.

Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I have ran the hard disk repair with no effect, also maintenance scripts with Onyx. I haven't noticed any other symptoms, everything else works fine.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.2

jja19,

Thank you for trying those steps and letting us know the results. From your post, we understand that the issue didn't happen in a new user. If that is correct, that means there could be files or settings in your original account causing this issue. You can test to see if removing login items (if any) help resolve this issue: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac The article title may say startup problems, but it shows the steps on how to remove login items.

If the issue continues after trying that step, you can contact Apple Support for further assistance here: Contact Apple Support

Best wishes.

Hi judysings

Thank you for your response and advice. I did as you told, rebooted to Safe Mode and used for browsing as it was very slow, but umount process started pretty soon. Then I rebooted to normal mode and umount process started again after less than 10 minutes. Then I created a new user with admin privileges, used lightly for a day and umount did not start. Then I switched from new user to my own user ID, has been running now since yesterday with no symptoms until just now. Time Machine did a backup and the umount is running at 100,0%; started right after TM finished.

So it might be related to my user ID somehow. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you for your time. Take care, stay safe.

Hey there, jja19.

We understand that after running macOS Big Sur on your MacBook Pro, you notice the unmount process is at 100% in the Activity Monitor. There was no issue with this before with your MacBook Pro. We'd like to know if this happens when using your MacBook Pro in safe mode and after restarting out of safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac Safe mode can stop certain software from loading, does a check on your disk, and can help us start isolating this issue.

You can also see if this issue is replicated in a new temporary administrator user: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac This can tell us if the issue happens in any user or specifically your user.

We look forward to your reply. Take care.
