iPad Mini won’t turn on

Last night while I was sleeping my iPad Mini 2 has been stuck on the low charging screen. This is only the 2nd time this has happened and both times have happened they have been at my grandmother’s house (part of Covid bubble) and has only been a problem the last time I went in January. The first time was solved by charging it with a portable charger but this time after putting it on the portable charger for 3 hours it has been stuck on the low battery screen again. I am charging it on another outlet right now to see if it works but I am pessimistic.

Is there any cause of this problem that is only effecting my iPad as I also charged my phone last night and it charged fine. I assume it might be to do with age as my iPad is almost 7 years old come August, and bearing in mind I am 20 miles away from my computer so can’t reboot it right now, what can be done to fix?

An iPad Mini 2 is actually from 2013 and is going to be actually 8-years old this year.

It is possible that the battery in this model might be starting to fail.

You could have an issue with the portable power bank, a bad charge cable and/or bad or failing Apple power/charging adapter, as well.

All of those external components can fail at any time, for any reason, too!

You could just try a simple hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons, to see if this may jump start your iPad battery.

I would do the hard reset with your iPad still on the power/chargIng adapter.

Your iPad mini2 was supplied with a 10W USB Power Adapter - whereas your iPhone Power Adapter may only be rated at 5W. Might you be using your iPhone Power Adapter by mistake. If so, if the iPad can charge at all, it would be very slow.

Most models of iPad require at least 10-12W (2.0-2.4A @5V) to reliably charge - 5W Power Adapters generally being inadequate for the job. Your portable charger (presumed to be a USB battery PowerBank) will likely have a higher output than your Power Adapter.

Having eliminated this possibility (it’s a common issue - many have been known to carry the iPhone 5W Power Adapter for its small physical size), you perhaps need to look at other common charging issues. To save needless repetition, this support page covers most of the potential causes:

You will need to see if you can pin down the exact culprit/source of this issue before contacting Apple.

Whether it is external components or actually the iPad, itself.

Apple CAN do a remote battery diagnostics to determine if the battery is failing in that iPad.
