Thanks for your help when I update to Big Sur I will choose the off option.
Have tried the commands in terminal found on you tube couldn't get it to work, for now will try to remember to turn
volume all the way down before shutdown. Thanks again.

Just turn your volume in macOS all the way down before you shutdown the iMac.

If you upgrade to macOS Big Sur you can turn this off with an option in System Preferences.
Thanks for your reply I am holding off on Big Sur until I am done with Turbo Tax (have read it has issues with Big Sur)
