Can you still export an iTunes library if the external HDD with some files on is not connected?

Hi,

My laptop died today and I was just wondering if I can resurrect it for long enough to export my iTunes library but I wanted to know if I could export it to a USB drive rather than plug the external HDD drive in? The only problem is that some of my songs are on the external HDD drive and I don’t know if it would export these over if the drive wasn’t connected? I am using iTunes on a Windows machine.

Copy off the entire iTunes folder from the dying machine. Restore it to a new one. Give the external drive the same drive letter as before. Shift-start-iTunes to connect to your restored library if you've put it anywhere other than <User's Music>\iTunes.

You can potentially extract the drive and place it in an external drive bay to recover data from it.
