Unable to open XLD software
I cannot open XLD - Apple says it cannot check it for malware software. It isn't in the applications.

I suspect that wasn't downloaded through the App Store. Apple has extra levels of security around non App Store software. I don't use Catalina but on my older OS I can right click on an app and I am presented with a dialog asking me if I am sure I want to run this software, etc. Here's a document discussing all this Safely open apps on your Mac - Apple Support
