Old Macbook won’t turn on

Sorry to be asking this but I really don’t know a lot about computers.

I have an old Macbook(the white one, circa 2006-2008(?)) from which I need to get some files(not stored in iCloud) and it won’t turn on. When I try to charge it, the green light on the charger is on. So I guess it’s working...Do you think changing the battery would work? I haven’t turned on in about 3 years so I’m guessing it’s the battery?

Thank you

You can try charging it but it wouldn't surprise me if the battery had completely failed after 15 years, particularly if left unplugged. Have you tried starting it while it is plugged in?

How far is it getting when you start it? Possible solutions vary according to what it is doing. Select your issue from the list on this support document --> "If your Mac doesn't start up all the way" click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT204156

If you cannot start it and all you want are the files, with that generation computer you could take the drive out of it and use a temporary adapter to copy files off of it. Let us know if you want to go that route.

Remove the battery to see if the laptop will power on. A completely discharged battery can prevent the Apple laptop from powering on. I definitely would not use the battery even if it would work or you risk having the battery swell which will damage the laptop (and make it extremely difficult to remove the battery). When there is no battery installed you may need to press the power button several times possibly even holding the power button for a bit longer than normal to power it on.

You can easily remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to another Mac using a USB to SATA Adapter, drive dock, or enclosure.
