Unable to `factory reset' Mac OS X (10.6.8) snow leopard

Hello all

I am using a MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and am trying to wipe the disk clean and start over.

I know that enter Recovery Mode by pressing Cmd+R on startup it does not work as it was added to Lion (10.7) and later versions of OS X.

Have tried several times to restarting with the grey DVD inserted while pressing "C" however it does nothing.

Any suggestions on how to factory reset this survival computer?

Many thanks,

Camila

Going back to your original post, you want to "wipe the disk" clean, right? So, it is already running 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) and you just want to reinstall it again or do you want to update to a newer OS? Do you have a good backup to restore you data from (Time Machine or clone)? Do you even want to restore data or just do a clean install (fresh start)? Have you attempted to erase the HD in Disk Utility AFTER A THOROUGH BACKUP?

Just trying to back up a bit and get an overview of your intentions with this machine; maybe that will help us know how to proceed. We'll get it!

@rapaniu33,

Just did what you said.

1 - inserted the install Mac disk and turn it off

2 - Turn on the pc pressing "Option" Key

3 - Appeared just Macintosh HD as you can see in the picture

When I clicked on it started normal unfortunately... I understand that it should have appeared an option to to start from the disk right? It did not :(

Many thanks,

Camila

When I insert the disk it runs runs runs and nothing happens and it gets ejected...the disc is without imperfections. The others runs and works, this is the only one that gets ejected.

Should I hold just C or alt/option + C?

I tried just pressing C while restarting like 20 times and nothing happens...the disc is ejected and the computer starts normally.

Many thanks!

Hi,

Tried to restart with the from the left that says " to start up from mac os x hold down the key C", the one from the right is to reinstall the software, it worked but nothing changed, just reinstalled some apps I have deleted.

Answering your question, no I haven't hold the alt/option key while pressing C, will try now :)

Model:

MacBook Pro 7,1

Intel core du0 2010

version installed Mac OS X 10.6.8

Thanks,

Camila

Try putting in the disk, shutting down completely, powering back on with "Option" held down (This takes you into 'startup manager'). Is the Install Mac OS disk available as a startup location? If so, choose it. If not, we'll keep trying!

P.S.- any known problems with your Superdrive? You say it reads the other discs fine, so probably not an issue.

As always, it comes down to "are we doing things in JUST the right order?".

Hi Rapanui33,

Yes, it is already running 10.6.3 and I wanted just to reinstall again - it could be the same version, or an updated version - But first I want to wipe the disk.

All the data is already safely stored in a external HD - I do not want to restore the data, I just wanted a fresh start :)

I tried to erase the HD though utility however the option to erase is gray, I cannot click on it and proceed.

Many thanks for your efforts Rapanui33 :)

Kind regards,

Camila
