"Hold for Authorization" when printing to shared Windows 10 Printer

I have a USB-connected printer on a Windows 10 desktop which is configured for password-free printer sharing for everyone. I was able to add it to a W10 laptop in the first instance and print without issues. However,

  • adding the printer is not possible on Catalina due to authorization failure on a pop window requesting Windows credentials; checking Guest or inputting registered user credentials both fail
  • On Big Sur, adding the printer was painless by checking guest access but print jobs fail with "hold for authorization" error. Clicking on the held job leads to a popup requesting Windows credentials which then fail with both "Guest" and valid registered user credentials.
  • Printing fails across apps

All platforms (Windows 10, Catalina & Big Sur) are fully updated.

Is this a known bug? Any workaround? Thank you.
