should the screen automatically rotate to orientation that I want- long keyboard size view vs. the tall, narrow view?

Swipe down from the upper right corner of the screen to get to the Control Center on your iPad. Then tap on the padlock icon so that it turns from red to white and unlocks the screen orientation. Tap on the screen to get out of the Control Center.

To add, some apps may not be coded to rotate.
Screen rotation is not a global feature of iOS/iPadOS.
Screen rotation needs to be coded into an app on a per app basis.
Especially if the apps were iPhone apps downloaded to the iPad.
Is the screen made to rotate to whichever orientation you want it to be? Mine sometimes will only work on the tall view.
