Macbook Pro 2020 Model - Black Border display issue

Good Morning,

I have an occasional issue where the display will not display full screen anymore, and it'll switch to almost like "windowed mode" but in that windowed mode, it'll be a smaller desktop. Its almost like the display stops using 2-3 inches from the bottom and the right side where that that space is filled with black. The mouse cursor can't get into this black space. Its literally not using the entire screen. Weird, Anyone experience this and what is the course of action?

I'll power down the unit, and it seems to work fine.

My guess is that its a severe OS bug, or a HW issue, but proving this is intermittent.

I've already reinstalled Mac OS (On 10.15.7)

I can send a picture to someone if they send me their contact.

Thanks,

Nicholas

—Try a SafeBoot to clear system cache files  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc.

Login and test. Reboot  as normal and test as caches get rebuilt.

I have a similar issue. There are black borders around the display of my 13-inch, MacBook Pro 2020, which is currently running on iOS version is MacOS Catalina 10.15.7. I also cannot go to BigSur due to some incompatibilities.

It is very annoying as the display is already quite small and this issue makes a few inches completely redundant.

In fact, it seems like an underscanning issue and it happens in native resolution without any external displays, mirroring or scaling.

I actually wonder that myself.

Maybe it started when the 10.15.7 update/supplemental update happened.

I do have Kaspersky AV installed, but thats needed. It doesn't happen on other macs, so i don't think that is it.

I tried the reset PRAM once before when i was having issues, Didn't see this issue for maybe 1 month.

Maybe there will be an update to 10.15.8 (when released) and it'll resolve it.

Big Sur isn't an option due to some incompatibilities.

I'll keep an eye on it then if there is no other users experiencing this.

Thanks for the info!

I agree. I think for my model it has dual graphics and auto switching, that has to be the reason. I disabled some settings in the system preferences to do with borders, but I don’t think that’s it. I think it’s a flaw in the operating system where it’s not displaying the full resolution to the edge of the screen as intended (full screen). It’s just full screen in the smaller area. I also haven’t had it happen since I posted this. I was noticing the unit overheating a lot and that would explain some odd behavior. These macs (and the OS) only spins up the fans when it’s at the absolute worst heat. You could touch the area above the Touch Bar and it was like “ow”. I use a third party app called mac fan control and it’s free. I noticed when it was hot it was like 80 degrees, stupid high. I turned the fans on a fixed rate and it stays around 35 all day long
