"An unknown error occurred" when trying to sign in to iMessage on mac mini

I signed out of an old apple id on this mac and wanted to sign into a new one. It was successful. Now I want to change the apple id on my iMessage app and i'm getting this error "An unknown error occurred"

The password is exactly the one I sign in with. I have made sure. I have been able to log into my apple account online.

iMessage login unknown error I am having trouble logging into my iMessage account on my Macbook Pro. I enter my login details & it searches for a while then it returns an unknown error has occurred. When I cancel that, it pops up a box asking me to log into iMessage but the user id is an old email address I have not used for over 5 years. iMessages works fine on my iPhone using my correct login information. I have tried several corrective actions I found but none has worked so far. I'm thinking about creating a new Apple id but I don't really want to do that. Thanks, Rick

MacBook Air I signed out of my Apple ID, and made sure I’m up to date with the MacOS updates but when I try to sign into iMessages on my Mac, it still says “unknown error has occurred”. It’s annoying and has been like this for a month. How do I fix this?

Sign in to iMessage: The password for <Apple ID> needs to be updated. I keep getting this message every few days on my MacBook Pro running 10.14.6. When I try to sign in to iMessages with my Apple ID and password, I get an error message saying "Could not sign in to iMessage. The user name or password was incorrect. Try again." Well, both the Apple ID and password WERE in fact correct, and I can use them to sign in anywhere else an Apple ID is required. And curiously, I get a DIFFERENT error message if I enter an incorrect password. In that case, the message says "Verification failed. Your Apple ID or password is incorrect." I have not actually used Messages on the Mac recently so I do not know whether these errors are benign or a real problem. But the frequent nagging to perform an operation that is impossible because of something corrupted on my computer is very annoying. What is going on here, and how can I fix it (short of wiping the disk and reinstalling the OS)?
