my apple watch is not paired to my phone so therefore it wont let me connect it to wifi to update my watch

my apple watch series 1 had been reset but needed an update before i now have tried to re connect it to my iphone 6s to update it and it wont allow the watch to connect to wifi to continue the update and im not sure what to do because it was already connected to my phone before
