Hi I been reading how using higher wattage plugs charge your phone quicker .
I just got the iPhone 12 Pro Max and I got a 29w plug and started charging phone and within 20 minutes my phone was getting really hot at the back so I assume this is not good . Why is apples recommendations on plains for faster charging on this phone or is there something wrong with the phone only had it 4 days thank you .

The phone will only draw as much power as it is allowed to, so don't worry about which charger you use. The phone will also shut itself down if it gets hot enough that it is an issue, well before it causes any damage.
For fastest charging, you should use the new 20W USB-C charger; the 29W charger you have will work, but for absolute fastest charging the phone needs to communicate with the charger using the USB-PD protocol, and the older 29W charger does not have that capability.

Hi thank you or quick reply but this was getting really hot and got worried it will damage phone or battery as online it states plug should be used for laptop then the one I’m using now 10w takes forever to charge
It's normal for a phone to get warm when charging, and it will get hotter when fast charging.
Unless the phone shuts itself down due to heat, don't worry about it.
