Apple TV App on MacBook Won't Play Rented Movie

I've rented a movie using the Apple TV app on my MacBook (Big Sur 11.2).

The movie has completely downloaded.

When I first pressed play I was presented with the message that the film must now be watched in the next 48 hours. After a couple of seconds the player window abruptly closed. This now happens every time I try to play the movie.

I have restarted my MacBook. I have de-authorised and reauthorised my iTunes account in the app. The problem persists. It does not affect purchased movies, only rentals (this already happened last week but my partner was using my computer whilst I was away and didn't attempt to fix the issue).

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.2

Hello s4mu3lmc4h0n,

We see that you're having some issues playing a rented video. We'd be happy to assist!

Just to clarify, this same thing has happened with multiple rentals is that right?

If so, can you boot in to safe mode and see if this issue is still present? Start up your Mac in safe mode

Keep in mind, it may take longer to finish the start up, as safe mode does some system checks, which can sometimes resolve issues. You'll also see some differences in the display. This is expected with safe mode, and when you restart normally, they'll be gone. After you've arrived on the Desktop, wait a minute or so and then restart normally. Test if the Apple TV app closes without being able to view the rental.

If you're still not able to watch it, this article has a "Get help" section with some additional steps: Rent movies from the Apple TV app

Including a link to this page, If you can't watch or stream movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app

Cheers!
