I have a new iMac (desktop) from December 2020. I can't be heard on zoom calls - have adjusted sound in preferences and in zoom. Do I need an external mic and, if so, what relatively inexpensive one works.

your iMac has a built in microphone. an external mic should not be required. have you gone into SystemPreferences>Security&Privacy? once there, in the privacy heading select the microphone tab and allow zoom to access your microphone. (by checkmarking zoom)
zoom works great on my iMac. no external mic needed.

Thanks for your suggestion. Zoom is/was already checked for both the microphone and camera - so that's not the issue.
