How to handoff to my macbook pro

I recently got a new M1 mac mini.

I have been using a 2015 Macbook Pro.

Mini has Big Sur (11)

MBP has Mojave (10.14.16)

Is there a way I can work on files on the Mac Mini and then open them on the Macbook Pro?

Is that Handoff?

Does the MBP need to have Big Sur on it?

Mac mini, macOS 11.1
