In short you have an old Mac (now about 11 years old) and an old version of Mac OS and are running into the limitations of using older technology. Sorry to tell you what you did not want to hear but them's the facts.
If you decide to buy a new Mac, please let us know how you use your current computer and we can suggest some Macs (new and used) that would be okay.

High Sierra 10.13.6 is the last version of Mac OS that your 2011 iMac will run. If you must have a later version of Mac OS it is time to buy a later model iMac. 2012-2013 may run up to Catalina 10.15.7 and 2014 and later iMacs can run current (11.2) versions of Mac OS.
Why do you need to upgrade the OS?
Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download High Sierra. If the iMac is already running it, you can't.
