About Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

A GPS (only) watch can do everything a GPS + Cellular can do as long as your iPhone is nearby.

With a Cellular model, you can make calls and use data or apps without your iPhone nearby.

To use the cellular feature, you MUST have an eligible cellular service plan with a supported carrier and your iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier. For more info. see:
