Spinning wheel in App Store, can't download

I want to download apps from Apple’s App Store but each time I try the progress wheel starts spinning without downloading anything. If I click ‘Open’ for any installed app nothing happens there either. The only thing I can think of that might have interfered with the settings is an Apple security update (2021-002) which I installed about a week ago. Otherwise downloading from the App Store had worked fine until yesterday.

What I’ve tried ...

- logging out and logging back into the App Store (a number of times).

- disabling my firewall

- force quitting appstoreagent and all other entries related to 'store' in Activity Monitor

- running OnyX to clear caches etc

- moving the contents of com.apple.appstore in /Library to the trash and restarting.

- trashing the following files in ~/Library/Preferences.

com.apple.appstore.commerce.plist

com.apple.AppStore.plist

com.apple.appstored.plist

com.apple.storeagent.plist

And the following folders ...

/Library/Application Support/App Store

~/Library/Application Support/App Store

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstoreagent

I restarted my computer after deleting these files/folders.

The option in System Prefs > Security and Privacy (General) is set to Allow apps downloaded from App Store and identified developers.

Not sure what else I can try. Any suggestions why this might be happening and what I can do about it? Am running OS 10.14.6 on a Mac Mini.

Thanks

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

I've tested this across several machines and the Mojave Security Update 2021-002 10.14.6 seems to have broken the App Store's ability to download or update apps

If anyone here has a working App Store after applying the patch that dropped a couple days ago, let us know.

Another way you can test to see if this is a problem is to click on your user name from within the App Store app. It will show all your previous purchases, however, instead of an "open" oval, everything will look like a download cloud. I believe this is because there is no manifest.plist file to tell the App Store what apps you have.

Anyway, the terminal command to open the the App Store folder is:

open $TMPDIR../C/com.apple.appstore/

It is safe to delete the contents of that folder as relaunching the App Store will refresh it. However, the manifest.plist does not seem to be refreshed and without that file, I don't think the MAS will work. If you do have the manifest.plist file, check its date because if it's not recent, then you likely have the problem as well. :-/

I have an escalated case with Apple Engineering and will post back when I hear something.

If it's not obvious, this pretty much stinks because anyone with this problem cannot buy, re-download, or update apps until it is fixed.

If you have not yet applied the Mojave Security Update 2021-002 10.14.6, my 2cents is to wait.

@amamik,

I'd hold off on the Catalina update as there is anecdotal evidence it may have a similar problem. However Big Sur seems to be okay...again anecdotally. I have not confirmed.

Before going to either, I'd highly recommend you make sure you don't have any important 32 bit programs as they will cease to function. You can see your 32 bit programs by looking in the app section of "about this Mac."

Hope this helps!

I am having the exact same situation on both of my Macs: laptop and desktop. I have been working with apple support via Chat and they insist it is not the security update. I have tried everything they have stated including reloading the OS to no avail. I recently told them there is an apparent correlation to the security update as both my MAC's are now down with respect to the apple store. Just today ( a few hours ago) they were adamant it was not the security update. I am still down and would welcome any assistance you might have or others. I plan to: 1) follow up with the chat again with my case number and 2) enlist help of my friend in IT who troubleshoots these things. I will let all know of anything that I find which works. I can't tell you how many hours I have spent on this in the last few days. I appreciate you posting this as I was on my way to address here as well.

@KeviL

Here's a temporary fix for you, but please, call Apple back when you can and tell them there is an active incident on this. I know, because I've filed it with their Enterprise Support team. The last time they called me, there were over 31 additional escalation tickets on this same issue. I recommend you ask immediately for a senior agent and see if they can find the existing ticket number. I'll look for it as well.

In the meantime, try the following. I've posted it to several other threads and confirmed it worked. Hope it helps.

While running App Store launch the Activity Monitor app and type "Apps" in the search field. You should see one process called appstoreagent. Click the "X" in the upper left and select force quit appstoreagent process. This should allow updates temporarily, but once you quit the App Store or restart your Mac, the problem will reassert itself and you'll have to do the same process again.

I thought I'd try your temporary fix but I found that I'm not able to sign in to the App Store now.

I deleted the contents of com.apple.appstore ( open $TMPDIR../C/com.apple.appstore/ ) along with other related files and folders in ~/Library etc. Then, after a reboot I clicked the app and it showed as being reset. However I was still not able to sign in. I even changed my password. The App Store must have recognised my sign-in details though because its status changed to show the number of pending updates next to the Updates section and the small red dot reappeared on the App Store dock icon.

I finally got through to a senior specialist. I must state this was not easy! Even as I arranged a call they transferred me to the wrong person, which he admitted. I don't think the "screeners" are appropriate trained or listen (maybe a time limit on calls?). BUT....amazingly as we got through all the details and I tried to show him what was happening (via screen sharing) everything worked without issues !!!!!!! LOL .......I explained adamantly it was not working for over two weeks !!!!!!! RWROSS I can only state you must have had some type of impact as my apple store on both my Macs are now working. I hope others have the same result upon trying.

Again much thanks and appreciation!!!

Hi Guys,

@KeviL, if you share your Case #, I can pass it along to the Sr. Specialist I've been working with. He would use it as a means to help them get better at tying cases together because your specialist should have been able to see that there were several open cases on the issue.

I can confirm that Apple Engineering applied a fix yesterday. I was able to confirm today and then asked for root cause analysis that I could share here.

From Apple:

As it has been explained to me with the recent security update for Mojave when the App Store launches, it asks appstoreagent for adoption eligibility. The issue seemed to stem from a wrong file type that was being provided by the process which caused a hang. After that was readjusted by our engineering team to be a compatible file type the issue seems to now be resolved.

If anyone has a reoccurrence of the issue, they can reference Ticket #: 214029
